Truffle's last foal(sired by Elvis) was a colt who is now Kim's senior stallion, "Ready Teddy Go."
After leaving school, Kim spent a year in Canada working with standardbreds and then returned to thefarm. In 2001 Kim and her family's farm was wiped out by foot and mouth disease so they decided to begin their stud. Later on the family began farming again but have continued also to breed and produce their beloved cobs.
Kim came second at her first show, Tebay fell and coloured show, organized by local farmer and gypsy cob breeder, George Winder. She began showing seriously in 2002 with mares; Jazz, Lisa and Minstrel and then brought out, "Ready Teddy Go," as a two year old and won everything.
Jess is one of Kimico Stud's foundation mares, she has bred many winners including Jazz. She is a beautiful mare and a proper old fashioned sort. Kim loves all of her mares but a favourite is a mare called Cisco who she purchased from her friend, the late John Pratt. Cisco is graded with CHAPS and has now retired from a successful showing career..
Kim only ever sells young stock and never the parents as these become too much a part of the family. However, the fact that the parent stock do a job show the potential her foals have for prospective owners who wish to produce a quality traditional cob.
Gypsy cobs are of the most beautiful and versatile horses; today we can thank past generations of travelling folk who have given us a horse capable of doing pretty much anything we ask of it and to a high standard. This is why it is exciting to come across breeders who not only breed quality, traditonal cobs but also take the trouble to produce them, work them and show the world what they can do.
Kim Carrick of Kimico stud is one such breeder who has made a name for herself for breeding quality traditional cobs and producing and showing them to a very high standard. Last week her stallion, "Tango in your Dreams," competed at horse of the year show.
Kimico stud is based in the stunning countryside of Cumbria where Kim and her family have always been involved with farming and horses. Her great uncle Kit Potter had a herd of gypsy cobs and her grandfather kept fell ponies. Kim favoured the gypsy cobs and would spend every spare minute out on the fell to be with them.
Kim fell in love with a cheeky coloured mare called Patch who turned up at a local farmsale; Kim's father tried to buy the mare, however she made fifty pounds more than her Dad was prepared to pay. Patch had a filly called Truffles who frightened her owner and as a result Kim's Uncle Ted swapped a fell for Truffles and brought her home and used her as a brood mare.

Teddy at Chaps 2010 |
Teddy is a graded stallion with CHAPS UK and has won many championships in hand and under saddle. He has a wonderful temperament and is driven by the family. He has clearly passed on his quality and character to his offspring with, " Tango In Your Dreams," being a fine example. Tango was graded with CHAPS as a four year old and is Produced by Sue-Helen of Traditional Cobs. Tango is very well schooled and judges have been impressed by the ride he gives. To qualify for Horse of The Year show is no small achievement and Kim is delighted with the work that Sue-Helen has put into Tango.
At only five years old, Tango represented Kimico Stud at HOYS last week and did them proud. His performance, calm behaviour and manners stand testment to his breeding and careful production. It is true that traditional cobs are somewhat at a disadvantage in showing as they have in the past not had their own classes to enter so often end up competing against natives and hogged cobs etc. However, horses like Tango constantly raise the standards and opportunities for them to compete at top level are improving yet it is still exciting to see traditional gypsy cobs hold their own at a world class show. Kim has not only produced quality traditional riding cobs, she has produced quality riding horses!

Tango has the kindest face |
Just as important as the stallions are the mares and Kimico stud have a small selection of quality broodmares many of whom they also show. Kim prioritises temperament and conformation; while she admires the minis and trolley ponies she specialises in the old fashioned larger types, usually 14.3hh plus. Much of the Kimico breeding originates from her Great Uncle Kit's horses as well as bloodlines from other traditional breeders from the North of England.
