The Popcorn Stallion & His Beautiful Daughter

The popcorn stallion has been turning heads for a few years now and with his gleaming, golden coat and flowing mane he it is easy to see why he has so many fans.   Everyone loves a pretty horse but Popcorn has so much more than good looks.  From head to toe, this horse is perfectly put together and this is what brings performance.  Popcorn's paces are breath taking and his movement takes him from stunner to show stopper! Popcorn loves to work and he will work all day and most importantly he is kind and sensible. Popcorn has been sought for stud duties and has sired some excellent horses.  It is always exciting to see foals, but it is even better to have the chance to see them mature and ultimately work.  Popcorn is an excellent producer and passes his attributes to his progeny and for me this takes Popcorn from a special horse to an exceptional stallion. Owner, Robert Giles has carefully produced this beautiful Popcorn daughter from a filly and has ...

Decades of producing and breeding exceptional cobs and still enjoying it! Robert certainly knows how to produce a cob and he also has a rare talent for spotting a goodun.  It matters not whether a diamond is mixed up with a herd of horses in winter and covered in mud or whether it is a day old - Robert will always spot a special one and produce it to the highest standard. At present, Robert has a selection of quality cobs with two current favourites who are getting ready for Appleby. The Popcorn Filly The Popcorn filly is a stunning 14.2hh palomino with plenty of charisma and beauty with also a kind and sensible temperament. Jimmy Bower's Show Stopping Mare on Wickham

What a beautiful sight with Jimmy Bower's stunning mare on Wickham Fair.  This mare is a real show stopper and the turnout and harness topped it all off.

Tony Scott's Pride

Pride needs little introduction as he has fans throughout the UK and beyond.   I have been admiring Pride for years and I thought he was a show stopper on first sight.  However this is a horse that looks more beautiful with every appearance. Pride really does have everything you could wish for in a quality cob.  First of all he is stunning!  A handsome horse with a pretty head and a kind eye. I am sure that his owner, Tony Scott must work very hard on turn out, but it is worth it!  For me, the flowing white mane, tail and feathers make the horse look as though he has stepped off the pages of a fairy tale story. Pride isn't just beautiful, he is an exceptional working cob with the proper conformation that enables him to go all day. It is rare to see a cob whose proportions are so in balance and the combination of strength and substance with athleticism. Pride has wonderful, natural step and he always looks so happy and enthusiastic in his work. ...

The Queenie Mare

The Queenie Mare The Queenie mare is outstanding in every respect - she really has it all.  Queenie is a beauty; a lovely old fashioned stamp of a cob with a pretty little face and amazing action.  She also has the temperament to match with a great attitude to work and the kindest nature. Queenie does everything.  She has pulled a dray, a London trolley and loves her work. Queenie has loads of presence and plenty to offer yet is sensible and honest enough to suit a novice or a child.  This is what we call a proper cob!!!

Increase in UK Tick Population

Scientists are warning that the recent wet and mild winter may cause an explosion in the tick population the UK, especially as the weather starts to warm up.  Tick numbers and the incidents of the diseases that they carry have increased in the last two decades. Ticks are parasites that feed on the blood of humans and the animals that they bite and can spread a number of diseases including Lyme disease.  Public Health England estimates that there are 2,000-3,000 cases of Lyme disease each year in England and Wales with approximately 20% picked up abroad. As well as humans, animals that have access to the outside can be affected by ticks and subsequently disease.  As a result of the increasing population of ticks in the UK it is important that we are all tick aware and Lyme disease aware for both ourselves and our animals. Parts of the UK known to have a high population of ticks include: Exmoor the New Forest in Hampshire the South Downs parts of W...

Tiger Tim

Tiger Tim is a stunning Gypsy cob stallion who has made quite a name for himself over the last few years with an impressive list of showing and dressage achievements. Owned and bred by Denise Kersley, Tiger Tom is currently ridden by Alys Matravers. At the recent South West Winter Regional Championships 16-19 February 2014 Alys and Tim gained the highest scores of the four day show proving that cobs can do dressage. With an impressive score of 79.44%n the pair won the Baileys Horse Feeds Novice Open Music Freestyle. Here is a video of Tim and Alys in action: Tim and Alys haven't been doing dressage together for that long and as they don't have a sand school they train in a field and have certainly achieved a great deal and shown that they can compete with the warmbloods.  It is clear that they have plenty of potential to go further in the dressage and they are aiming towards medium level this year. For further information about Tiger Tim, check out his stud car...

Sweet Itch

Sweet Itch is an allergic response to the saliva in the bite of Culicoides Midge(gnats), affected horses will suffer severe itching as a result of such a bite.  The intense itching is followed by an autoimmune over reaction which causes a thickening of the skin and lesions. Sweet Itch is a terrible condition which makes the life of afflicted horses a misery, particularly throughout the summer months. Sweet Itch is characterised by constant itching and rubbing of the top of the tail and also the mane.  Depending on the severity other areas may well be affected such as the face, neck and sometimes other parts of the body. The constant feeling of itching causes a great deal of distress and many sweet itch sufferers will spend most of their time trying to rub or scratch on anything available such as stable doors, fence posts and even rolling on the ground.  This will result in loss of hair and further soreness and damage to the skin. Horses with untreated and...

Robert Giles Horses

Robert with Tom Thumb Robert Giles is one of Britain's most respected breeders of gypsy cobs and is renowned for his talent and experience in producing driving horses.  Robert comes from a long line of horsemen and the horses are a way of life; he and his family have been based in the Sussex area for many years where they breed cobs and trotters and deal in quality horses. Robert has supplied me with many lovely horses and ponies over the years as well as plenty of good advice!  He has a real eye for a horse and can pick a good one a mile off, if I wanted a second opinion I would ask him first.  There can't be many people about who have observed and worked with the sheer amount and variety of horses that Robert has, and while he loves his cobs he has great enthusiasm for all ponies and horses and the ability to get the best from them all.  Lovely old fashioned palamino mare - Robert is bringing her back to harness after time off for f...

The Old Kent Horse

Kimico Stud

Gypsy cobs are of the most beautiful and versatile horses; today we can thank past generations of travelling folk who have given us a horse capable of doing pretty much anything we ask of it and to a high standard.  This is why it is exciting to come across breeders who not only breed quality, traditonal cobs but also take the trouble to produce them, work them and show the world what they can do. Kim Carrick of Kimico stud is one such breeder who has made a name for herself for breeding quality traditional cobs and producing and showing them to a very high standard.  Last week her stallion, "Tango in your Dreams," competed at horse of the year show. Kimico stud is based in the stunning countryside of Cumbria where Kim and her family have always been involved with farming and horses.  Her great uncle Kit Potter had a herd of gypsy cobs and her grandfather kept fell ponies.  Kim favoured the gypsy cobs and would spend every spare ...
